Many bodies yet remain to be identified. In some cases, identification isn’t possible as intense temperatures can turn bodies to ash. See the extensive news coverage of VIFM’s involvement in the In the Media section below.
MIHSR: Training and support for Cochrane systematic reviews The Australasian Cochrane Centre (based at the Monash Institute of Health Services Research) is offering training workshops in Melbourne during March at no cost for authors of Cochrane systematic reviews. His research interests are using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as an assessment technique to determine environmental (such as physical activity from childhood to adults) and genetic factors on knee osteoarthritis. He is also interested in exploring the roles of inflammatory cytokines and obesity-related hormones such as leptin in osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. Currently he is undertaking a NHMRC project to determine the impact of childhood physical activity, fitness and fatness on knee structural change 20 years later. | Contents | Space committee report - Martha SinclairAlthough DEPM has only been located in its currently premises for slightly less than five years, another move is already looming on the horizon. Monash University will lease two of the four new floors currently being built on top of the existing Alfred Centre. These floors will be occupied by the DEPM component of the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, part of the Central School and part of the Department of Community Emergency Health and Paramedic Practice. A Design Liaison Group comprising representatives of these tenants has been meeting with the architects and a Project Manager from Monash Facilities and Services Division for the last few months to discuss the fitout of the Monash space. The Monash floors will include a 100-seat Lecture Theatre, Seminar and Tutorial rooms to replace teaching space in the old Monash Medical School building (which will be demolished after the relocation to the new building). The relocation date was initially planned for mid-2010. However, construction has been progressing more rapidly than anticipated (see photo, right), and therefore the move to the new premises may occur earlier in the year. Further updates will be given in future editions of this newsletter. | Contents | PhD newsRecently started Sara Ivory 26/01/09. Topic: Epidemiological risk prediction tools; methods and applications. | Contents | Survey on environmentally friendly policies for DEPMFrom Rosanne Freak-Poli: Thank-you to all the suggestions that I received for environmental friendly policy in DEPM. From these suggestions I have compiled a questionnaire as it is important that everyone has the opportunity expresses their views before changes are made: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=C_2be0VfcJXJcFY5HJtARRNg_3d_3d The survey covers options for soft copy documentation, products purchased at DEPM, waste management, computers and lighting. So far 31 employees have completed the survey and some of the answers are very interesting. If you have any further comments regarding environmental issues within the DEPM please email Rosanne.Freak-Poli@med.monash.edu.au | Contents | Personal newsSad news: Jessika Scott Willis's sister sent Colin Fee an email on Dec. 20. "I am sorry to have to tell you that my sister, Jessika Scott Willis [pictured, right], died on 17 December 2008 as a result of the recurrence of her lymphoma. I know she worked in your department or related activities for many years. She came back to England in May and was comparatively well, enjoying doing the rounds of friends and family and settling first in Southsea near Portsmouth, then in Burbage, Leicestershire where, unfortunately she spent very little time before going to The Royal Infirmary Leicester. Jessika underwent more chemotherapy but her breathing became increasingly compromised. She was only 53 years of age." Her funeral was on Dec 23. Michael Abramson gives tribute: “I am particularly sorry to learn of Jessika's death. She was a valued member of my research group and made an essential contribution to our study of asthma deaths. She also completed an MPH at Monash and will be missed by many of her fellow students.” Glad news: Congratulations on the engagement of two couples in DEPM: Molly Bond and David Khuu, and Basia Duig and Elias. Dr Wei Shi worked in DEPM on a WHO fellowship in 2003. Now she is working as a post doctoral associate in the Department of Radiation Oncology in Washington University School of Medicine in USA. She recently published a paper "Disassembly of MDC1 foci is controlled by ubiquitin-proteasome-dependent degradation" in J Biol Chem [2008; 283(46):31608-16]. She sends her appreciation and greeting to Prof McNeil through email. She also wishes all the people in DEPM a nice Christmas holiday and happy new year. [received 24/12/08] Pictured left, with husband and child. Dr Colin Wood, Senior Research Fellow in the Clinical Informatics and Data Management Centre, is leaving for a 2 year trip around Australia, New Zealand and South America.
