She is going to VACCHO (Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation). Her last day here is 12 June. We have all enjoyed her heritage recipes, commitment to good causes and cheerful commitment to a huge workload. Des Gul, Admin Officer for IPHU since 2006 is now going to be working for Microbiology, Monash University, at the Clayton campus. So it’s not so much “Goodbye” as “Au revoir”. Good luck & best wishes to both in their new roles. Enquiries to Rosanne.Freak-Poli@med.monash.edu.au Monash University does have some environmentally friendly policies in place, but perhaps not well known or acted on. For example, Monash already has a catering policy, dated Jan 2009, recommending vegetarian catering http://fsd.monash.edu.au/files/Sustainable%20Catering%20Guide.pdf. There was a recent Radio National show, 6 May, about sustainable diet. The forum speakers recommended that our diet include a higher proportion of food which is less energy & water intensive - food which manufactures its content directly from the sun i.e. plants. http://www.abc.net.au/rn/foraradio/stories/2009/2561532.htm.| Contents | PHAA Vic branch update - Helen Keleher and Penny RobinsonPublic Health Association of Australia news PHAA Vic branch, together with Health Issues Centre, held a forum titled "Making (some?!) sense of the health system - how does it all fit together - or not??" on Tuesday 26 May evening. The forum was very interesting - and showed how complex the Australian health care system is. It was also a great success with 80-90 registrants. Alpine Attack - 7 March 2010 ("Labour Day holiday" weekend) 230 km loop from Falls Creek via Tawonga Gap, Harrietville, Mt Hotham (30 km climb !), Dinner Plain, Cobunga, Omeo and back to Falls Creek. Congratulations to Hendrik Zimmet who recently competed in the Olympic distance triathlon at the Arafuna Games in Darwin in early May. It’s been a week of PB's (personal bests) for me this week (see right, bedizened with medals!) On Sunday, I raced in the time trial at Kew Blvd. My time over 1-lap of 22 min 40 secs placed me 16th out of 20 in D grade, but I don't care about that - as I broke my 1-lap PB by 15 seconds :-) Normally I'm passed by lots of other competitors - but this time, I got to pass one competitor (two people racing the course on a tandem) twice up the hills - after they passed me on one of the downhills in between. Then last night at my cycling club's wind trainer session, I managed to briefly reach a PB maximum cadence of 175 rpm ... that's almost 3 revolutions per second! There was no falling off my road bike while it was attached to the wind trainer this time though - that was my "trick" a few weeks ago!| Contents | Births, deaths and marriagesKatie Webby (Dale), a Victorian Public Health Fellow who recently spent three months with the Infectious Disease Epidemiology Unit, gave birth to a baby boy (Tristan John Dale) on 5th April.
